How do I renew a Notice of Commencement of Work/Preliminary Notice on the Mechanic’s Notice and Lien Registry site (MNLR)?

A preliminary notice that remains posted on the mechanics’ notice and lien registry internet site two years after the date of posting shall be declared inactive, unless earlier renewed. A notice of commencement of work, if there are no related active postings, shall be declared inactive two years from the date of posting, unless earlier renewed.

Notices of commencement of work and preliminary notices may be renewed on the MNLR within 60 days prior to being declared inactive.

Notices of commencement of work and preliminary notices shall be removed from the MNLR one year after being declared inactive.

 

To renew a notice, follow these steps:

Step One:

Go to our website – sos.iowa.gov – and hover over the “Businesses” tab at the top, then click “Mechanics Lien Search” in the dropdown menu that appears.

Step Two:

Click the “New Posting” tab at the top, then sign into your account.

Step Three:

Click the radio button next to “Residential”, then next to “Other Postings”, and select “Renewal” from the dropdown list.

Step Four:

In the “MNLR number” field, enter the filing number of the notice you want to renew, then click the red “Continue” button on the right.

Step Five:

As long as the next screen is captioned “Renewal” at the top, click the red “Continue” button at the bottom.

Step Six:

On the review screen, review the information shown for accuracy. Once you’re satisfied that it’s all correct, click the red “Continue” button at the top or bottom.

 Step Seven:

Follow the remaining prompts to submit with the filing fee.
